Conscious Sedation Ensures Your Child Leaves the Dentist Smiling
Kids are notoriously nervous about going to the dentist.
Often some of this anxiety remains even when they are going to a kid’s dentist that has kid-friendly space and kid-sized tools.
Though we do as much as we can to make children feel comfortable in an often uncomfortable environment, some children tend to be more nervous, or they have other diagnoses that cause them to be a little more nervous when it comes to going to the dentist.
But we want all of these children to be happy coming to the dentist as well! In order to ensure smiles all around, we provide pediatric conscious sedation dentistry.
The Benefits of Pediatric Conscious Sedation Dentistry
We recommend conscious sedation for many reasons. Some children have naturally nervous temperaments, others are not good at sitting still yet, and still, others have other developmental differences, such as autism.
There are many different sedation methods in pediatric dentistry we generally recommend kid’s conscious sedation because it does not render the child unconscious, it simply puts the children in a more relaxed state so that they will be more receptive to the dental procedure.
A Pediatric conscious sedation dentistry ensures that the child is calm and possibly drowsy and ensures the child not be as scared of the procedures that are being performed.
Two Types of Pediatric Conscious Sedation
There are two type of conscious sedation methods that Sea of Smiles provides. Each has its own benefits and the particular traits of your child will determine what method to use.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
This form of conscious sedation is also known as laughing gas. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over the nose to help your child relax.
Your child will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. The dentist will have the child breathe normally through his or her nose, and within a few short minutes, the effects of the nitrous oxide start to set in. Your child may feel light-headed or a tingling in the arms and legs. Some report that their arms and legs feel heavy. Ultimately though, your child should feel calm and comfortable.
One of the biggest benefits of nitrous oxide is that the effects wear off almost as soon as the mask is removed.
Similar to nitrous oxide in effect, conscious sedation provides the relaxation without the pain relief. This is a good solution if your child needs to relax for a general dental appointment.
It allows the child to retain the ability to breathe independently and respond appropriately and normally to physical tactile stimulation and verbal commands. Minimal conscious sedation is achieved with medication taken by mouth.
Pediatric conscious sedation allows for a calm and stress-free dentist trip for all children. It helps alleviate negative associations the child may relate to such appointments and allows for a more productive trip for everyone.
At Sea of Smiles, we want children to be calm and relaxed during their trip to the dentist. To set up an appointment at either our Yardley (267-392-5878) or Bensalem (215- 433-1840) locations; or learn more about conscious sedation or our other services, give us a call!
